What is Woke?
I confess that one of my minor sins is reading way too much social media. As a result, I often see heated debates between “conservatives” and “liberals” over what woke actually means. The upshot is that the left feels that woke is a good thing. The definition they huddle around is that woke means to be alert to injustice and discrimination in society, especially racism. The right, while generally agreeing with the definition, sees the left as hyper-vigilant and finding injustice and racism even in the most innocent of social interactions. As a result, left and right remain at odds over what would seem to be a relatively positive idea of being a color blind and equal opportunity society.
Many times, in social media, a liberal will accuse a conservative of not even knowing what “woke” is and just making it a disparaging term with no context. After much research it seems there are three components that liberals emphasize that one must adopt to be woke. This liberal orthodoxy is critical to being woke. Failure to adopt any one of the following pillars will result in disdain and often serious punishment. There is really nothing like the intolerance of the tolerant left. The three pillars are as follows.
First, all white people are inherently racist, and all black people are oppressed. Sounds a bit racist, doesn’t it?
Second, science is good except when it comes to biology. Gender is a fluid social construct, and your genitals and chromosomes are meaningless when it comes to how you “identify”.
Third, abortion is healthcare. (Except for the baby who dies.)
So being woke means that one must accept the delusions embedded in the pillars and not simply tolerate them but advocate for those pillars. It is improper to offer facts and arguments that would negate any of those pillars. As Saint Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said, ““There's a lot of people more concerned about being precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right.” The question is who defines what is moral?
